General Resources​

​​

Eastern Area Agency on Aging (EAAA) - Serves as the Aging & Disability Resource Center for Washington County, offering a comprehensive suite of services for older adults and individuals with disabilities. Their programs include information and assistance, options counseling, caregiver support, and access to long-term care resources, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for participants. EAAA is located at 240 State Street, Brewer, ME 04412, and can be reached at 1-800-432-7812 or 207-941-2865.

Bridges Home Services - Provides programs in Washington County. Their services cater to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering personalized care and support to enhance daily living and community involvement. These programs are designed to promote independence and improve the quality of life for participants.

Sunrise Opportunities - Located in Machias, offering a variety of services for adults with intellectual disabilities, autism, or mental health needs. Their programs include home support services, assisted living, employment services, community/work supports, and mental health services, all aimed at promoting independence and community integration. Disability Rights Maine - Provides advocacy and legal services to individuals with disabilities in Washington County. Their services include support for individuals facing discrimination, access issues, and other legal challenges related to disabilities. They can be contacted at 888-956-4276 for assistance.

Calais Resources

​

Calais General Assistance Program - Helps local residents secure emergency and basic support (such as food, utilities, shelter-related costs) when other resources are insufficient. Applications are handled at City Hall, and in emergencies other times by appointment. Applicants typically receive a written eligibility decision within 24 hours after submitting a complete application.

​

The Calais VA Clinic - Offers outpatient health care for veterans, including mental health services. Accessibility-wise, the clinic has wheelchair availability, and the facility accommodates veteran patients with mental health or physical disability needs.

​

AMHC Calais Outpatient - A clinic providing behavioral health services including counseling, mental health treatment, and substance use disorder supports. This includes outpatient therapy and medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

St. Croix Regional Family Health Center (SCRFHC) - Serves community members with mental health and substance use conditions. Their services include assessment/screening, individual and family therapy, psychiatric medication management, crisis prevention/stabilization, and coordination with other care providers.

Sunrise Opportunities Community/Work Support Services - These services are aimed at supporting people with developmental/intellectual disabilities to engage in community integration, small group or one-on-one activities, and help with jobs or peer support. There are also recreational, art, outdoor, and social programs.

Machias Resources​

​​

Sunrise Opportunities - A non-profit organization based in Machias that offers a range of services for adults and children with intellectual disabilities, autism, and/or mental health diagnoses. Their programs include community/work supports (helping people join in community life, develop skills through small-group or one-on-one activities, arts, outings, Special Olympics etc.), home support services (help with daily living tasks in the home such as cooking, hygiene, shopping, safety) and assisted living facilities, including the Machias Boarding Home for individuals with intellectual disabilities. They also manage subsidized housing (Sunrise Residence) with eligibility for people with disabilities or older adults with low income.

Machias General Assistance Program - Provides emergency help for residents who cannot meet basic needs. This includes assistance with rent or mortgage, food, heating fuel, non-elective medical needs, and other essentials. Those with disabilities can use this as a short-term safety net when regular resources are not enough.

​

University of Maine at Machias Student Accessibility Services (SAS) - Supports students with disabilities—including learning disabilities, medical conditions, ADHD, physical or sensory impairments—by coordinating accommodations such as alternative formats, extended time, note taking, etc. This helps ensure that students can access education equitably.

The Durable Medical Equipment Exchange (The Connection Initiative) - Offers free loans of medical/assistive equipment in Washington County. Items often include wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, commode chairs, etc. This resource helps reduce cost barriers for necessary equipment for people with physical disabilities.
