MedAccess Prescription Assistance Program - Operated by MaineHealth, the MedAccess program assists patients in finding low-cost prescription drug options. It connects individuals with pharmaceutical companies' patient assistance programs, low-cost generic programs, Medicare Part D, and state and local prescription programs. MedAccess staff work with patients and healthcare providers to complete necessary paperwork and ensure medication delivery. The service is free and available to anyone needing help with prescription costs. ​


CarePartners Program - Provides free and low-cost healthcare, including prescription medications, to low-income, uninsured adults aged 19-64 who do not qualify for public health coverage. Services include primary and specialty care, lab and hospital services, and referrals to community resources. Participants receive a membership card granting access to services, with office visit co-pays up to $10 and prescription co-pays ranging from $10 to $25.


Patient Assistance Line - MaineHealth's Patient Assistance Line offers support to patients needing help with health coverage applications, accessing affordable medications, transportation, housing, and food insecurity. The service is free and available to any patient within the MaineHealth network. Staff work with patients to address issues affecting their health and connect them to appropriate resources. ​


Low Cost Drugs for the Elderly or Disabled (DEL) & Maine Rx Plus - Assists Maine residents aged 62 or older, or those 19 and older with disabilities, who meet income and asset criteria. It covers up to 80% of out-of-pocket drug costs after other insurance, with co-pays up to $2. Maine Rx Plus offers discounts on brand-name and generic drugs to residents of all ages who meet income guidelines, with discounts up to 60% for generics and 15% for brand-name drugs. ​


Ellsworth Free Medical Clinic - Serving Downeast Maine, the Ellsworth Free Medical Clinic provides prescription assistance by facilitating access to free medications from pharmaceutical companies for eligible patients. In 2023, the clinic provided $342,800 worth of free medications, including insulin and inhalers, to manage chronic diseases. Patients must meet income guidelines and be established patients at the clinic.

New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) Financial Advocacy - NECS offers free financial advocacy to help cover the cost of cancer care, including assistance with medications, co-pays, and deductibles. They connect patients with various financial support programs.


Epilepsy Foundation New England's Patient Assistance Program - Provides information on pharmaceutical companies' patient assistance programs that offer free medication to low-income patients. They also list nonprofit organizations that help individuals access these programs.

National Resources

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) - Oversees several initiatives to assist Medicare beneficiaries with prescription drug costs. The Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), also known as "Extra Help," provides financial assistance to eligible individuals, reducing premiums, deductibles, and copayments under Medicare Part D. Eligibility is based on income and asset limits, and starting in 2024, all qualifying individuals receive full benefits, as the partial subsidy option has been discontinued. Additionally, CMS coordinates with State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs), AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs), and pharmaceutical-sponsored Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs) to ensure that Medicare beneficiaries receive the maximum available prescription drug benefits.

The Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA) - Connects patients with appropriate assistance programs based on their needs and eligibility.

NeedyMeds - Provides a comprehensive database of PAPs, discount drug cards, and other resources to help reduce medication costs.

Rx Outreach - A nonprofit mail-order pharmacy offering affordable medications to qualifying individuals and families.

SIRUM (Supporting Initiatives to Redistribute Unused Medicine) - Facilitates the redistribution of surplus medications from donors to patients in need, operating under Good Samaritan laws in 44 states.

GoodRx - Offers free coupons and price comparison tools to find the lowest prices at local pharmacies.
