Helping Hands - Offers both Personal Care Assistance (PCA/PSS) and Homemaker services throughout Eastern, Central, and Southern Maine, with offices in Lewiston and Winslow. Staffed by trained, certified caregivers, they support everything from personal hygiene and grooming to planning and preparing meals, light household cleaning, laundry, shopping, and errands Helping Hands. Whether you need just an hour a month or round-the-clock personal support, Helping Hands creates personalized care plans to match your needs, and takes care of administrative aspects like payroll, insurance, and bonding for peace of mind.


Catholic Charities of Maine - Aims to help physically disabled adults and seniors live independently at home, especially those on a tight budget. This statewide service pairs clients with professionally supervised para-professionals who assist with light housekeeping, grocery shopping, laundry, running errands, meal prep, and basic home tasks ccmaine.org. As one client from Portland put it, “They help me live in MY home, rather than A home.”


Maine DHHS Home Care & Independent Support Services - Administers several programs including Home Care, Independent Support Services (Homemaker Services), and Consumer Directed Attendant Services to enable older adults and individuals with disabilities to remain independent in their homes. These services may be funded through MaineCare (Medicaid) or state-level programs Maine. After an assessment to determine eligibility, services may include light housekeeping, personal care, meal assistance, respite, assistive technology, and environmental modifications.


Aging Excellence - Offers a broad suite of Homemaking, Household Support, and Social Companion services across a wide area of Maine (including Bangor, Portland, Augusta, Kennebunk, and more) Aging ExcellenceAging Excellence. Their services include meal preparation, grocery shopping, transportation, medication reminders, light housekeeping and laundry, closet and pantry organizing, pet care, and even airline travel assistance Aging Excellence. They also offer more personalized support such as bathing assistance, grooming, mobility help, respite care, Alzheimer’s care, and 24-hour supervision when needed. For those who prefer a holistic package, Aging Excellence can also provide handyman and yard services, property monitoring, and multi-generational family support during recovery periods.

Massachusetts


MassAbility Home Care Assistance Program (HCAP) - Provides homemaking services to adults aged 18–59 with disabilities who need support with household tasks to avoid hospitalization or institutional placement. Services—coordinated by a dedicated case manager—include light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, grocery shopping, and medication pick-up Mass.govmassmecfs.org. To be eligible, applicants must meet financial guidelines, reside alone or with another adult with a disability, and must not be legally blind (as those individuals are directed to specialized services).


Massachusetts Home Care Program (via Executive Office of Aging & Independence) - Overseen by the Executive Office of Aging & Independence supports older adults (60+) and persons with disabilities, including younger individuals with early-onset Alzheimer’s or related dementias. Services are tailored to assessed needs and income level, and include “chore services” (light housekeeping tasks such as cleaning or organizing), grocery shopping or delivery, companion services, and more to help individuals safely remain in their homes.


MassOptions (In-Home Supports) - Individuals under 60 with disabilities can access the Home Care Assistance Program, offering homemaker services such as housekeeping, laundry, grocery shopping, and meal assistance MassOptions. Additionally, MassOptions refers veterans to the Veteran’s Independence Plus Program (VIP), which provides flexible in-home and community-based services including homemaking to support aging in place.


Springwell (In-Home Services) - A nonprofit elder-care provider, offers a wide array of in-home services, including chore assistance, homemaking, laundry, and grocery shopping. Their Care Managers help clients navigate free, subsidized, and private-pay options, conduct in-home assessments, and guide individuals through accessing services or benefits Springwell. These services are available to adults with disabilities and older adults, with assessments provided at no cost.


Tempus Unlimited PCA Program - Enables individuals with long-term disabilities to hire, train, supervise, and manage personal care attendants. While traditionally focused on hands-on support like bathing and dressing, PCAs can also assist with instrumental activities—including cleaning, meal prep, and shopping—integral to maintaining independence at home.


TILL Respite Innovations - Offers Respite Cleaning Services in partnership with Four Points Cleaning Service. This program provides 3-hour cleaning blocks specifically for full-time caregivers—granting them a much-needed break by having household cleaning handled by professionals.


Connecticut


Chore Service (Northwest Connecticut) - A nonprofit organization serving frail elders and individuals with disabilities in Northwest Connecticut communities. They provide non-medical support that includes light housekeeping, yard work, and other essential tasks to help clients maintain their independence. A client shared how the service “made a difference that day … my home was once again clean, warm and inviting” CT Insider. The program also recently added transportation assistance and increased worker pay, further enhancing its capacity to serve the community CT Insider.


Rhode Island


Visiting Angels (Providence & Bristol Counties) - Offers non-medical in-home care services for seniors and disabled adults in Providence, Bristol counties, and nearby areas. Their services include grocery shopping, light housekeeping, laundry, meal planning and preparation, companion care, fall-prevention assistance, medication reminders, and transportation support, each customized to individual needs.

National Resources

AHCA Servant’s Heart Program - Connects individuals who need cleaning services—but cannot afford them—with professional cleaning providers willing to help. Operating nationwide, the program relies on local cleaning companies to volunteer free or low-cost services based on need. There are no strict eligibility requirements—the decision to assist lies with the participating providers. While great care is taken to match those in need with compassionate help, recipients should understand that service delivery depends on provider availability and discretion.


Cleaning for a Reason - A nonprofit offering free home cleaning services to individuals undergoing cancer treatment. Established in 2006, the organization has assisted over 50,000 families across the United States and Canada, partnering with more than 1,200 maid services to deliver care worth millions of dollars. Cleanings are intended to alleviate the burdens of housekeeping during treatment and bring comfort and relief to patients and their families.


Hot Mess Express - Although initially focused on mothers with postpartum depression and mental health challenges, Hot Mess Express has grown into a national volunteer-driven network offering free cleaning services. Volunteers—often organized through local chapters—step in to help overwhelmed parents by decluttering, cleaning, organizing, and even providing meals. Founded by a nurse motivated by a single request for help, the nonprofit now spans multiple states and continues to expand its reach.


GoGoGrandparent (Cleaning Assistance via Vetted Services) - Provides a phone-based platform that connects seniors and individuals with disabilities to vetted, trusted cleaning professionals for paid services. The key advantage is its accessibility—no smartphone or app is needed; just call. Customers can schedule one-time or recurring cleanings, with personalized service tailored to mobility or cognitive needs. Though not subsidized, this platform simplifies access to reliable cleaning support.
