"The Shoes - A Chorus"
written by
Libby Banks
I.
We remember the morning she refused to go to the zoo.
She screamed for an hour even though she loved animals.
She ruined the whole day. We tried everything.
It was always something with her.
II.
We remember the screaming. (Was it crying?)
Over shoes. (Was it shoes or pain?)
For an hour. (Was it ten minutes that felt like an hour?)
We tried everything. (Did we ask what she needed?)
It was always like this. (Was it always?)
III.
MOTHER: She was manipulative
FATHER: She was overtired
SISTER: She was terrified
WE: There were reasons
IV.
We knew she didn't want to go (We knew she wanted to go desperately) And the new shoes—
We did our best (We didn't know)
We couldn’t have known (We should have known)
Her shoes hurt (She told me years later they felt like knives) But she was five, how could she explain? (We thought she was being dramatic) We thought— (We didn’t think)
We ruined the day She ruined the day
We tried our best We tried everything
V.
MOTHER: We did everything we could
FATHER: We couldn’t have known
SISTER: We failed her
WE: The math of blame never equals zero
VI.
She says she forgives us (Does she?)
We say we didn't know
The tantrum meltdown —
We understand she was— suffering being difficult struggling
We were doing our best (Our best wasn't sufficient)
She's fine now (Is she?)
VII.
HER: (I remember my pain The way the shoes hurt The sound of my screaming The way no one understood I remember all of it)
