Long Exit Out of Eden

written by

Roy A. Barnes

Where is God?

Where is God now?

The warm summer sky moves its benign clouds

as with a gentle west wind, but devoid of guidance...

i never realized i could lose my Garden of Eden

when i was habitating among the Central Wyoming Cottonwoods

fully in bloom, shedding its seeds in hopes for continuance

after an afternoon cloudburst would've also cleansed the sins of one's willing heart

But the serpent warned, "You'll surely die if you attempt to partake."

So i stayed sheltered in my safety of a comforting fear:

The late Spring lilacs, promising me a summer of forevers, beckoned me,

seducing me with its intoxicating morning scent chased with dew

that took the long exit out of Eden

as the sun rose higher and higher

over its mountainous sentinel

whose songbirds descended to sing me an ominous melody

before Providence admonished, Look!!! Look!!! Look!!!

You won't stay in My Eden forever...it's passing on by

For My North Platte carries off your savory provisions

in its raging currents that never turn back

But i'll die, so said the Serpent.

So Father, let me snuggle tightly in my dreams, so they'll always be:

if only i never chase them across the worn pavements

and the lush, green havens, who hide under blowing winter snows as Eden hibernates

As suddenly as it embarked upon me,

my Eden was forever gone, dying with the autumn leaves:

While its worn, tattered gates are still open to me

Alas...only frolicking angels roam about,

who still remember to condemn my suppressed desires

which paved my long exit out of Eden:

The cold, uneven stones eastward and onward stab my ensuing falls

as i stumble forward God-less, seeking redemption
