Breath & Shadow

Summer 2011 - Vol. 8, Issue 3

"Jazz Soul"

written by

Dorothy Baker

You sit at the portal between jazz and my heart

No drama here

Only clean sound

Telling the truth playfully, fearlessly,

Not afraid to be the "bad" guy

Like you

You make the day percussive

Vibrating and breaking my shell

Pieces falling around me

With the pounding of bass,

Crashing of cymbals

Your rhythm ignites my passion

We are thunder and lightning

Music and dance,

I ride your sound

Electrified.

Dorothy Baker has been writing since her childhood in N.C. Some of her work includes short stories, essays, poems, and film reviews. She currently lives in Massachusetts where she enjoys snowshoeing, nature walks, and exploring the local bike paths.
