Draw the sea growing larger

and it grows larger.

We don’t have to imagine

the sea growing larger.  It grows.

The sea swallows the sea.

Draw wavy lines

and presto! waves.

A polar bear

with her soft round ears

above the water

floats in the growing sea

amid melting ice

chains of ice islands,

islands where people live,

melting into so much loss

Marilynn Talal received a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Ph.D. in Creative Writing from the University of Houston where she won the Stella Earhart Memorial Award.  She has published more than 200 poems in The Paris Review, Southern Poetry Review, The New Republic, and elsewhere.
